Blood Pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. If this pressure rises and stays high over time, it can damage the body in many ways. High blood pressure can damage your heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of your body.
Knowing your blood pressure numbers is important, even when you are feeling fine. Blood pressure is measured as systolic and diastolic pressures. Systolic refers to blood pressure when the heart beats while pumping blood. Diastolic refers to blood pressure when the heart is at rest between beats.
Symptoms of low Blood Pressure (hypotension): If your blood pressure is naturally low, it’s unlikely it will cause you any symptoms or require treatment. However, low blood pressure can sometimes mean there’s not enough blood flowing to your brain and other vital organs, which can lead to symptoms such as: dizziness; lightheadedness; unsteadiness, or feeling of loss of balance; fainting; blurred vision; a rapid, or irregular heartbeat (palpitations); confusion; feeling sick (nausea) and general weakness.
High Blood Pressure (hypertension) means that your blood pressure is continually higher than the recommended level. It rarely has noticeable symptoms. If left untreated, high blood pressure increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke. It is often referred to as a “silent killer”.
The only way of knowing there is a problem is to have your blood pressure measured – at least every few years.
Hawthorn – Blood Pressure: Hawthorn is often used for high blood pressure. It can be taken as a herbal tea and does not interact with any medication. Hawthorn is available in teabags from health stores. Drink two cups daily every two days for a month. Infuse a tea bag in a cup of hot water for five minutes. Remove tea bag and drink warm.
